The Institute of Biological Science and Technology was established in 1994 as a master's degree program, which is the first biotechnology-related academic department at NCTU.
The Ph.D. program was initiated in 1998. The first undergraduate students were officially admitted in 1999.
The Institute of Biochemistry started recruiting in 2001 while the Institute of Bioinformatics started in 2002.
In 2003, the College of Biological Science and Technology (CBT) was officially approved for opening by the Ministry of Education.

Ph.D. Program in Biomedical Science and Engineering
Recently, the interdisciplinary research area of “Biomedical Science and Engineering” is the most important and fully developing one at NCTU. It is one of the most important development strategies for NCTU to achieve the goal as one of the top international universities. This Ph.D. program combines the rich and solid cross-college resources and the research potential of NCTU Colleges of Biological Science and Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Science, Engineering, and Photonics. It aims to nurture clinicians with the research outcomes of modern biomedical science and engineering to help the innovation and effectiveness in their medical and diagnostic work. It also intends to lead in the world's top biomedical science and engineering research and accelerate the development of the emerging biomedical industry. Students in this program may choose their dissertation advisor from any full-time faculty of the Colleges of Biological Science and Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Science, Engineering, and Photonics. Students are welcome to schedule talks with faculty members prior to applying for admission.
Ph.D. Program in Interdisciplinary Neuroscience
The program intends to cultivate the talents with interdisciplinary knowledge on neuroscience and engineering. Its prospective students will do research on fundamental neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, clinical neuroscience, and neuro-engineering. Students with backgrounds in electrical and computer engineering, computer science, engineering, life science, or clinical medicine are well encouraged to apply for admissions.
Ph.D. Program in Industrial Development
This Ph.D. program is established to cultivate doctoral talents with advanced visions for the biotechnology industry, innovative technologies needed for the development of industry, and R&D capabilities on biotechnology product research. Its main development is to create a precise biomedical research and development platform and to integrate the university's interdisciplinary research with industry. Based upon academic research, the program sets up its main direction to help to solve the problem on clinic medicine and industrial applications. It is expected to integrate the interdisciplinary technology and faculty resources of the college with the strong R&D capabilities of the university's information and communication technology (ICT) and thus bring Taiwan's biotechnology industry into the innovative domain. It will not only upgrade the domestic biotechnology industry but also establish a mutually beneficial model of industry-academia cooperation.
